At The Good Shepherd Catholic Primary School, we believe that reading is the key to accessing every aspect of your child’s education. We highly value reading and we encourage our children to become enthusiastic readers. We want our children to have a positive attitude towards reading and strive to teach the children how important reading skills will be to them in the real world. We provide them with class reading areas, a school library, daily whole class reading, one to one reading, reading comprehension sessions and also reading initiatives that aim to inspire and encourage all children to read.
We have a clear, consistent, whole school approach to reading. Competence in reading is the key to independent learning and is given the highest priority, enabling pupils to become enthusiastic, reflective and lifelong readers. We believe that success in reading has a direct effect upon progress in all other areas of the curriculum and is crucial in developing children’s self-confidence and motivation.
